About the role
An opportunity has arisen to support the Council’s Scrutiny Function as it holds the Council’s executive to account and reviews areas of key importance to the Borough.
The Principal Scrutiny Officer post works in a small scrutiny team, and supports the Council’s scrutiny panels and Overview and Scrutiny Committee largely independently. Often acting as a liaison between backbench Members and the Council’s executive and supporting officers, the role requires both the ability to analyse large amounts of information from different sources and the integrity and judgment needed to command the confidence and respect of members and senior officers.
Taking ideas of Members, colleagues and the Community, the post-holder will develop practical and specific scoping documents to support an effective scrutiny review, which will be delivered using relevant witnesses and evidence that are turned into sound, clear report with recommendations that can lead to real improvements in how the Council delivers to its community.
The role will involve some evening meetings and is offered as a permanent contract.
About you
You will be a strong self-starter, able to work alone, with a good understanding of local government and current issues in Haringey. You should be able to give sound, clear advice on complex issues with a high degree of political sensitivity. You should be able to act at pace and work effectively with elected members, senior officers within the Council and external stakeholders.
You will be able to spot key issues, develop and deliver reviews using project management skills, analyse both quantitative and qualitative evidence and present reasoned findings in a clear and well-structured way.
Other Requirements
This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. An enhanced disclosure check with the DBS will be undertaken.
